Phyllis Devericks’ “Blue Series” is inspired by her love of the Florida sky and ocean.
Phyllis has carefully chosen the colors for each piece based on the emotions they evoke. She captures the many shades of blue in cloudy, sunny or stormy Florida skies and translates them beautifully to the canvas. In her ocean pieces, the color choices masterfully evoke the dynamic range of the ocean from calm and tranquil to raging tempest.
Born in Connecticut, Phyllis developed and interest in art after taking an art appreciation course at Drew University in her early college life. However the direction of her life pointed her towards other avenues including teaching, raising her three sons and finally the finance industry, trading bonds for a financial firm in Hartford, Connecticut. After moving to Florida, her interest in painting resurfaced while taking classes from an instructor in Cocoa Village. As a result, she discovered a love for painting in acrylics and also experiments with inks, oil pastels, pigments, metallic paints, glitter, and gold leaf. She loves to paint with a pallet knife and often uses heavy pigment to create thick texture. Subjects of choice are flowers, birds and landscapes and recently she has added a more contemporary, abstract style to her portfolio.
“I paint as often as I can and I love all the time I paint. Initially I painted in my office at home but outgrew the area and moved to a studio space, which a friend and I share. I am thrilled with the change in environment and find the new space gives me greater inspiration. I feel extremely fortunate to have an interest in which I have such passion.”
